How Much Does Training Cost?

Have you understanding about investing in training, but just couldn't find it in your budget? If you're like many habitancy running their own business, you might think that training costs are a sunk investment. "Why should I train someone so they can go to work for someone else?" you might think. While the cost of training can be high, the cost of not providing training can be even higher.

The last time I settled an order for pizza to be delivered, I experienced first hand the cost of non-training. I phoned the restaurant, and was immediately settled on hold for about three minutes. After listening to the hold music long enough to know the lyrics, I was greeted by a flustered sounding employee. I settled a straightforward order, which the worker had to take twice after losing it the first time. "We just got a new system, and no-one here knows how to use it," he explained.

I've worked places that have gotten a new computer system, and was sympathetic. However, after an hour, and no pizza, my pity was overtaken by hunger. I phoned back and inquired about my dinner. The worker explained that the order had been lost and agreed to give it to me for free because it was so late. The delivery driver was apologetic too, stating that he was sorry, that they had a new computer law that they barely understood. I tipped the driver and began to add up the cost of non-training for that business. Whether it was lost orders because of being on hold too long, or comp'ed pizzas because they were delivered late, I guessed that it was pretty high, or at least higher than the owner would have wanted.

I also wondered what the new computer law cost. According to Michael Gartenberg, vice president and study director for the Personal Technology & access and institution study groups at Jupiter study in New York, has found that 90 cents of every dollar spent on new software for the end user is wasted because of lack of training. I think that the ratio could as a matter of fact be applied to any initiative that a business undertakes, Whether in technology, customer service, or in operations.

This is an important thing to remember in tight economic times. Training is often the first on the chopping block when it comes to rescue money, but the cost of cutting it could be many times more than you save up front.
